Steven Thompson believes Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers will clearly indicate who he sees as his number one striker when he comes to pick his team to face Rangers on New Year's Eve.

Rodgers, who has been switching between Leigh Griffiths and Moussa Dembele as his main striker, insists he currently has no nailed down number one striker at the club.

Griffiths started for Celtic in their 2-1 win over Dundee at Parkhead at the weekend and scored, with Dembele being brought on to replace him in the 78th minute.

The pair are involved in a tussle to secure the striker's spot in the side, made even more intriguing by Rodgers claiming he has no preferred option.

But Thompson is not sure whether that is the case and feels Rodgers will show his true hand when Celtic head to Ibrox to play Rangers at the end of the year.

"For me Griffiths has the jersey and he should be starting just now", Thompson said on the BBC's Sportscene programme.

"He's scoring week in, week out and there's no doubt Dembele has gone off the boil a wee bit.

"That's [the Rangers game] when we will find out who is going to be his number one [striker]", he continued.

"He'll pick his strongest team for that Rangers game."

Dembele scored a hat-trick in a 5-1 rout of Rangers earlier this season, but with Griffiths in good form, he will feel he has a shout at keeping the Frenchman out of the team for the fixture.
