Rangers boss Mark Warburton has emerged as a surprise contender to fill the England Under-21 manager’s post left vacant by recently appointed England boss Gareth Southgate, according to the Times.

The FA advertised for the job last week and while the Rangers boss is unlikely to officially apply for the post before Friday’s deadline, he has his backers inside English football’s governing body.

They have been impressed by the work done by the former Brentford boss in working with and developing young players and have not ruled out the possibility of approaching other individuals.

Warburton is currently involved in turning Rangers into a viable Scottish Premiership club, who can challenge Celtic’s dominance going forward and the FA may have to work hard to persuade the 54-year-old to move to St. George’s Park from Ibrox.

The FA are slated to conduct interviews with candidates for the Under-21s job on 13th January and while Warburton is not expected to be on the list, they could approach the Rangers boss.
