Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho admits he faces a nervous wait to discover how serious an injury suffered by Marcos Rojo in the Red Devils' 4-0 win over Reading is.

Mourinho's team brushed aside the Championship outfit at Old Trafford in a game which saw Wayne Rooney open the scoring to draw level as the club's all-time leading goalscorer with Sir Bobby Charlton, on 249 goals.

Further goals were scored by Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford (two) as Manchester United overwhelmed Jaap Stam's visitors.

The one dark spot for the hosts was the loss of Rojo to injury in the first half, with the former Sporting Lisbon man being replaced by Phil Jones.

Manchester United are already without Eric Bailly as he is preparing for the Africa Cup of Nations and Mourinho admits he can ill afford to lose another central defensive option.

"I don't know [what the damage is]. We have to wait a little bit", Mourinho told MUTV.

"A muscle is a muscle and you're always afraid of it, but let's see what is going on.

"It would be so important for us to keep our central defenders fit for the month of January.

"But I prefer to wait.

"Chris Smalling and Phil Jones did a very good job for us", he added.

Manchester United have been linked with moving to snap up Benfica centre-back Victor Lindelof, but Mourinho appeared in recent weeks to cool on completing the signing.

It remains to be seen if Rojo being out for a substantial period could change his mind.
