Leeds United manager Garry Monk feels fringe players such as Alex Mowatt showed great mentality in the Whites' 2-1 FA Cup win over Cambridge United last night.

The League Two side dominated Leeds in the first half and went into the break leading the third round clash through a 25th minute goal from Uche Ikpeazu.

Leeds came out after the break determined to avoid a shock exit from the FA Cup and Stuart Dallas levelled the scored for the Whites, with Mowatt scoring the winning goal just after the hour mark.

The 21-year-old midfielder has not been getting regular games this season for Leeds under Monk and the 37-year-old feels his fringe players did an excellent job to find a way to win in difficult conditions last night.

He feels players such as Mowatt showed great mental toughness to get Leeds over the line at the Abbey Stadium.

The Leeds boss told BBC Radio Leeds: “It was great for all of them.

“There were a few players who haven’t had as many minutes and physically that was a really tough game on a difficult pitch; hard to express yourself on that type of pitch.

“But I thought what they did was to show great mentality and that’s key – mentality in these games as we have been showing the winning mentality to keep going, find your way through it and find a way to win.

“It is our strength and Mowie epitomises that and it was an excellent performance.”

Leeds will face the winners of the third round replay between AFC Wimbledon and Sutton United in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
