Jason McAteer is not disheartened over Liverpool's prospects heading into their clash against fierce rivals Manchester United on Sunday despite the Reds failing to score at Southampton.

Jurgen Klopp's men started as firm favourites to beat the Saints at St. Mary's and in so doing take control of the EFL Cup semi-final tie between the two Premier League sides.

But Liverpool looked off the pace throughout and slipped to a 1-0 defeat, notably having goalkeeper Loris Karius to thank for avoiding an even heavier loss.

While Liverpool struggled to score at Southampton, McAteer is not concerned, as he does not believe Manchester United's defence is as good as the Saints' backline.

Assessing the game on LFC TV and looking ahead to the trip to Old Trafford, McAteer said: "We've got more than enough to beat Manchester United at Old Trafford.

"Manchester United, I don't think their defence is as good as Southampton.

"You can get at their defence."

McAteer also explained he expects a very different type of game at Old Trafford to the one which unfolded at St. Mary's.

"I think it will be a bit more of an open game", the former Liverpool star said.

"It's a unique fixture, so you'd expect the Liverpool players to be right up for it."

If Liverpool beat Manchester United, they would increase the gap between the two clubs to eight points.
