Arsene Wenger has insisted that his future is only part of the negotiations between Arsenal and Mesut Ozil over a new contract and not the defining factor.

The German attacking midfielder has a little less than 18 months left on his contract and the Gunners are more than keen to tie him down to a new deal at the Emirates as soon as possible.

However, the negotiations have dragged along for months and Ozil is not any closer to signing a new deal with Arsenal, which has led to speculation over his future at the club.

Wenger’s future at Arsenal is also uncertain as his contract expires at the end of the season and he has remained non-committal about signing a new deal with the north Londoners.

Ozil recently insisted that he needs clarification over the Frenchman’s future at the club as he is at Arsenal because of Wenger, but the Gunners boss stressed that his player was ‘misinterpreted’.

He admits that his future is part of negotiations between the club and Ozil, but insisted that there are many other facets to the deal and him staying at Arsenal is not the defining factor.

Asked whether he needs to clarify his future for Ozil to sign a new deal, Wenger said in a press conference: “No, not necessarily.

“It’s misinterpreted; of course he wants to know about the managerial situation, but it’s just a part of his decision.

“There are many other ingredients in the negotiation.”

“We always speak; I speak more with his agent on the contract than with him”, the Frenchman added when asked whether he has spoken with Ozil about his future at the club.
