Leeds United boss Garry Monk feels the fans staying after the final whistle at Elland Road following Friday night's 1-0 win over Derby County shows the Yorkshire giants are a "proper football club with proper supporters".

Monk has the Whites faithful fully on side and Elland Road is witnessing some of its largest crowds in recent years; despite Friday's fixture being an evening kick off and live on TV, Leeds still drew over 25,000 to Elland Road.

A Chris Wood goal before half time gave Leeds all three points, moving the Whites up to third in the Championship table, and Monk was thrilled to see fans staying behind after the final whistle.

It was, he believes, something which spoke volumes about Leeds as a club.

"That shows it's a proper football club, with proper supporters that understand everything that goes with being at Leeds United", Monk told LUTV.

"They can see clearly how committed those players are on the pitch.

"I think no matter the result, with that type of commitment and passion, that mentality that they've got, they would have probably stayed even if we'd lost the game.

"They appreciated what they were seeing and that's great", the Leeds boss explained.

"I talked about that relationship, it seems to be getting stronger and stronger and of course at Elland Road we want it to be a fortress.

"At this moment in time it is."

Leeds now have a lead of eight points over the seventh placed team in the Championship, meaning they are in pole position to secure a spot in the playoffs at a minimum.
