Chris Sutton believes Sunderland are doomed and feels there is no reason for Jermain Defoe to remain at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland went down to a damaging 3-1 home defeat to Stoke City on Saturday afternoon, a result which leaves the Black Cats sitting second bottom of the Premier League with just 15 points from 21 games.

In what was a disastrous afternoon for Sunderland, they were 3-0 down by the 34th minute after Marko Arnautovic struck a brace and Peter Crouch got on the scoresheet.

Defoe pulled one back for the home side in the 40th minute as he continued to show his goalscoring touch, but Sunderland could not score again and saw the points slip away.

For Sutton, Sunderland's cause is hopeless and he believes there is little reason for Defoe, who has already been the subject of a bid from West Ham United, to stay.

"They've got no hope, absolutely no hope", he said on the BBC's Final Score programme.

"Defoe scores his goal, takes his chance, why would he want to stay at Sunderland?"

The Black Cats next take a break from league duty by heading to Turf Moor for an FA Cup third round replay against Burnley on Tuesday night.

Their next league action comes next Saturday away at West Brom.
