Gerard Houllier believes that a player transfer between Liverpool and Manchester United remains unthinkable.

The last direct transfer between the two clubs took place in the 1960s and despite the occasional rumour linking both Manchester United and Liverpool players with their rivals, it has become an unwritten rule that the two sides do not do business together.

And Houllier does not see the situation changing, as if it did, the player in question would be constantly booed.

The former Liverpool boss told French sports daily L'Equipe: "Today, this remains impossible, unless you are constantly covered in boos and jeers."

Liverpool are in action against Manchester United later this afternoon at Old Trafford, in a crunch Premier League fixture.

And Houllier dubbed the clash "a war", even though it is possible to go for a drink with enemies after the game.

"There's always things in these games, there's always tension.

"This is war.

"But once it is over, we'll have a drink."

Manchester United head into today's fixture having won their last nine games in all competitions, while Liverpool go into the clash on the back of an EFL Cup defeat away at Southampton.
