Jose Mourinho says he hopes the "critics are fair" when they assess his Manchester United side's 1-1 draw at Old Trafford against Liverpool.

Poor defending from Paul Pogba, who lost Dejan Lovren in the penalty box when a cross came in and then scrambled to get to the Croatian, ultimately handling the ball, saw Liverpool given a penalty in the 27th minute.

James Milner made no mistake to fire the Reds ahead and Liverpool were comfortable until Manchester United adopted a more direct approach in the second half.

It eventually paid dividends as Zlatan Ibrahimovic drew the hosts level in the 84th minute, while both sides then looked for a winner.

It ended 1-1 and Mourinho feels ultimately it was his side on the front foot for the majority of the match, something he hopes is reflected in the analysis post-match.

"Very exciting, even for the non neutral – for Liverpool fans and our fans they were enthusiastic until the last seconds", Mourinho told the BBC.

"I didn't think the game had super quality.

"We didn't reflect the qualities we have and Liverpool have, but it was very emotional, intense, aggressive. We fought until the last second", the Portuguese continued.

"They were clever. They took their time, they know how to play football and control the emotions of the game.

"They knew they would be in trouble in the final few minutes.

"We were the team that attacked and Liverpool were the team that defended.

"Let's see if the critics are fair. I enjoyed it, but I will obviously be disappointed we didn't get the three points", Mourinho added.

Liverpool's draw at Old Trafford has ended Manchester United's winning run, which stood at nine consecutive games.

Manchester United now sit in sixth spot in the Premier League with 40 points, while Liverpool are third on 45 points.
