Zlatan Ibrahimovic believes his Manchester United side were not at the top of their game after they played out a 1-1 draw at home against Liverpool.

It was a cautious start at Old Trafford as both sides tested the other, with Liverpool filling the middle of the pitch with bodies and Manchester United trying to find a way through by switching the ball wide.

Then a moment of madness from Paul Pogba, who handballed in the box after scrambling to stay with his man – he lost him when the cross came in – handed James Milner the chance to slot home from the penalty spot and he made no mistake.

Jose Mourinho brought Wayne Rooney on at half time as Manchester United looked to push for an equaliser.

The pressure was slowly cranked up by the home team and eventually paid off when a cross found its way to Ibrahimovic, who had to adjust and just managed to aim his header over Simon Mignolet in the Liverpool goal in the 84th minute.

Liverpool did not drop back to hang on, which meant the final six minutes and injury time saw both sides try to win it, the best of the chances falling to Georginio Wijnaldum, but his shot was not good enough to beat David de Gea and it ended 1-1.

For Ibrahimovic, Manchester United were not at their best and had to adjust their style in the second half in order to get at Liverpool.

He said on Sky Sports: "We got one point, we were not at the top of our game.

"It was a hard game, a hard fight. We were 1-0 down and chased and chased. It was a different game in the second half and we got an equaliser.

"We made simple mistakes.

"We were more direct in the second half. They played with high pressure and in the first half there were too many mistakes in our build up."

The Swedish hitman is not disheartened by the draw and insists Manchester United remain on a good run.

"We would like to win every game of course to close the gap even more but 1-1, we continue like this, we haven't lost a game in 15 or 16 and we are there", Ibrahimovic added.
