Former France coach Raymond Domenech believes that Marseille’s attempts to sign Dimitri Payet from West Ham make no sense for the team.

The 29-year-old France international has been banished from training at West Ham as the player wants to leave the London Stadium in the current transfer window.

Payet is said to be keen to return to France with his former club Marseille, but West Ham have already knocked back an offer from the Ligue 1 outfit for the wantaway star.

However, Domenech feels signing Payet doesn’t make any sense for Marseille as they already have players in his position and it won’t solve the club’s problems at the back this season.

Speaking on Europe 1, the former France boss said: “Payet is an aberration. As part of the recruitment strategy he makes no sense.

“Marseille are fighting to strengthen an area of their squad where they already have players and their weakness is not in their attack.

“With Payet they will have the same defensive problems.”

And the ex-France coach urged the club to put the €40m it has been estimated is needed for Payet to better use.

"With €40m they can find one or two defenders."

Despite their tough public stance of not allowing Payet to leave the club in the current transfer window, West Ham are reportedly coming around to the idea that they will have to let him go.
