Liverpool legend David Fairclough believes Trent Alexander-Arnold has managed to prove his doubters wrong, following his performance in the Reds’ 1-1 draw with Manchester United on Sunday.

The 18-year-old started at Old Trafford, with first-choice right-back Nathaniel Clyne missing the key clash through a rib injury.

Alexander-Arnold put in an impressive display on his full Premier League debut and managed to keep the Manchester United attackers at bay for the majority of the game.

However, Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored in the 84th minute to cancel out James Milner’s first half penalty as both teams settled for a point.

And Fairclough, who thinks Alexander-Arnold silenced his doubters with his performance against Jose Mourinho’s men, admitted that he is proud of the teenager’s efforts at Old Trafford.

“There were question marks and people were initially a little bit worried about Trent Alexander-Arnold”, he said on LFC TV.

“Those who know Trent Alexander-Arnold would know that he has really made a vast leap this year.

“He thoroughly deserved his chance and the fact that he was against the likes of [Anthony] Martial, [Henrikh] Mkhitaryan and [Wayne] Rooney, he made that look easy in any point of the game.

“[Despite] the mistakes that he made, one or two maybe, you can still be really proud of his efforts.”

Alexander-Arnold, who is a product of Liverpool’s youth system, has thus far made five first team appearances in all competitions for the Merseyside giants.
