Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen is due to have a scan on his ankle later today amid fears of ligament damage.

The Belgium international centre-back was forced off during the course of Spurs' 4-0 thrashing of West Brom at White Hart Lane at the weekend and looked in some discomfort after hurting his ankle.

Spurs are hoping Vertonghen has avoided serious injury, but should find out today as he is due to undergo a scan, according to Belgian daily Het Laatste Nieuws.

The White Hart Lane outfit fear that he may have damaged ligaments, which would mean a lengthy spell on the sidelines for the centre-back.

Vertonghen has established himself as a key man at the back for Mauricio Pochettino's side and his loss would be a big blow for the north London club.
