Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with making a move for Inter Milan defender Andrea Ranocchia in January, according to Italian daily Tuttosport.

The 28-year-old has been sparingly used by the Italian giants in the present campaign, and it has been suggested that the centre-back may well be on his way out of the San Siro during the winter transfer window.

Spurs are claimed to be looking at Ranocchia, whose present contract with Inter Milan runs until the summer of 2019.

The north London club are short of a defender at the moment after it was confirmed on Tuesday that Jan Vertonghen has suffered an ankle ligament injury.

The Belgian picked up the injury during his side’s 4-0 win over West Bromwich Albion last weekend, with Spurs yet to understand the extent of the damage.

Mauricio Pochettino’s team presently find themselves second in the Premier League table with 45 points from 21 games, seven behind leaders Chelsea.

The White Hart Lane outfit have conceded just 14 goals in the league this season, the lowest in the division.

It remains to be seen if Tottenham indeed bring in Ranocchia in a bid to bolster their defensive options.
