Rangers Under-20s boss Graeme Murty has admitted that Celtic were the better team, following the young Hoops’ 1-0 win over his side in a development league game on Tuesday.

Celtic dominated proceedings for the majority of the game at Murray Park, with Calvin Miller scoring the only goal of the match on the brink of the half-time break.

And Murty, whose side have now lost three consecutive league games, conceded that Celtic could have won the mini Old Firm derby by a larger margin.

The 42-year-old went on to explain that his disappointment did not come from the result, but due to the fact that his charges failed to showcase their true potential against Celtic.

“I’m obviously disappointed. I thought that Celtic deserved to win the game, and they could have won by more”, Murty told Rangers TV after the match.

“My disappointment doesn’t come from the result though – it comes from the fact we only showed brief glimpses of the players’ true potential.

“When they were brave and played and shifted the ball quickly as we asked them to do, I thought they were excellent, but we didn’t do that enough.

“The players didn’t impose themselves on the game and I thought we were too passive and accepting of what Celtic were trying to do, and that is a real good lesson for them against stronger players.

“They need to be brave and the way we teach that is to show them video and actually say ‘right, this is when you did it, this is where you didn’t do it’ and look at the contrast as they will see it stark.”

Rangers presently find themselves 10th in the development league table with 21 points from 17 games, 12 adrift of leaders Hibernian.

Murty’s team will next face 11th-placed Inverness CT in an away game on Tuesday.
