Liverpool have rejected a loan bid from Southampton for Mamadou Sakho and are looking to move the player on permanently by selling him in the winter transfer window.

According to ITV, the Saints want to take Sakho to St Mary's to increase their defensive options; there is uncertainty over whether Jose Fonte will stay after he handed in a transfer request.

The centre-back has not made an appearance for the Reds this season and has fallen out of favour after having differences with manager Jurgen Klopp during his side’s pre-season tour.

Klopp also signed two new centre-backs in the summer, Joel Matip and Ragnar Klavan, which further reduced Sakho’s chances of returning to the first team.

The 26-year-old turned down loan offers from West Brom and Stoke City in the summer and played with Liverpool’s Under-23 side until the beginning of the winter transfer window.
