Rangers striker Martyn Waghorn has stressed his side’s defeat in their friendly game against RB Leipzig was not a wake-up call and added that it was a learning experience for his team to play against quality opposition.

The Gers lost 4-0 to the Bulls at the Red Bull Arena last Sunday and did not pose many threats to their opponents during the game.

Mark Warburton’s men won just one of their last three games heading into the winter break before being thrashed by the Bundesliga outfit.

However, Waghorn believes that the defeat against RB Leipzig was more of a learning experience for his team than a wake-up call.

“The Leipzig game I wouldn’t necessarily say was a wake-up call, it was just showing us the fine margins and how to close the gap”, Waghorn told Rangers TV.

“The distances they covered, their intensity, their ball retention and their clinical nature in front of goal was clear for everyone to see.

“We could have played a reserve team down south or someone of a lesser quality, but it was good to get the challenge playing at their stadium in difficult conditions, and they were a great outfit and are second in the Bundesliga for a reason”, added the 26-year-old.

“It was a good test.”

Warburton’s men will resume their domestic campaign against Motherwell in the Scottish Cup on Saturday and will again play the Steelmen on 28th January in the Scottish Premiership.

The Gers are currently placed second in the league table and are 19 points behind league leaders Celtic, who also have a game in hand.
