Former Manchester City star Danny Mills has backed Tottenham Hotspur and has insisted that Spurs can cope with the absence of Jan Vertonghen.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men defeated West Brom 4-0 last Saturday and climbed to second spot in the Premier League table, as they start to click into gear heading into a vital part of the season.

Tottenham dominated the game but received one major setback during their clash against Tony Pulis’ men.

Vertonghen was replaced in the 64th minute as he picked up an injury and looked in great discomfort.

The defender could be sidelined for two months, but Mills believes Pochettino’s men won’t miss Vertonghen much as they have got players to replace him and also have strong holding midfielders in the form of Victor Wanyama and Mousa Dembele.

“Okay, Jan Vertonghen’s injury was a disappointment, but it’s not a crisis and players can come in, like Ben Davies did on this occasion”, Mills told the club website.

“Spurs have such strong holding midfield players, very dominant and physical in the centre of the park.

“The wing-backs push on and you have Vertonghen one side, okay, that will change now, then [Toby] Alderweireld and [Eric] Dier and they can hit those diagonal passes, a fantastic out ball”, added the 39-year-old.

Vertonghen has missed just one Premier League game this season due to suspension and has been a crucial member of Spurs’ defence.

Tottenham will face Manchester City on Saturday and will look to extend their winning run by defeating Pep Guardiola’s men in the absence of their key defender.
