Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has insisted that Memphis Depay remained a thorough professional until his last days at Old Trafford and feels he has the wrong public image.

The winger remained a peripheral figure at Manchester United this season and the club have reached an agreement with Lyon to sell the Dutchman to the Ligue 1 outfit.

Lyon have confirmed that Depay will be presented as their new signing later today, which will officially end his time as a Manchester United player after a one-and-a-half season stay.

Depay has received criticism for his flashy lifestyle during his time in England, but Mourinho feels the Dutchman had the wrong public image and remained a very hard working player behind the scenes.

The Manchester United manager has no complaints about the attitude of the player and feels the winger just wanted to play more football, which was not happening at Old Trafford.

Mourinho said in a press conference earlier today: "He was a fantastic professional.

“If someone thinks it didn’t work because he wasn’t a great professional, that’s totally wrong.

"One thing is some picture that someone takes with him in an amazing car or dressing in a very specific way, but the image is totally wrong.

“He’s a kid that respected everyone and worked hard to have more chances, a kid that was frustrated because he was not having that."

Depay thanked the Manchester United fans for their support in a farewell message on Twitter earlier this afternoon.
