Former Netherlands international Rafael van der Vaart has revealed he would be open to receiving approaches from Scottish giants Celtic and Rangers in the future.

Now 33 years old and soon due to turn 34, Van der Vaart is currently plying his trade in Denmark with FC Midtjylland, having joined the club following a spell in Spain at Real Betis.

Van der Vaart has also played in Germany with Hamburg, England with Tottenham Hotspur and his native Holland for Ajax, the club at which he started his career.

And he would be interested in potentially adding Scotland to the list, with the Dutch schemer admitting he is attracted to the idea of playing for Celtic or Rangers.

Van der Vaart told the Sunday Post: "Playing in Denmark with FC Midtjylland has been another experience for me to try. It’s one of many countries I’ve played football in.

"I've not had the opportunity to play in Scotland – but we’ll see what the future offers.

"I like Scotland, and I’ve had many team-mates at club and international level talk so highly about the passion and the rivalry that exists.

"They often spoke about Celtic and Rangers, and it does appear to be something quite special.

"So, for sure, if something was put to me, then I’d look at it."

Van der Vaart, who won 109 caps for the Netherlands between 2001 and 2013, insists he has kept himself in good shape and believes he can keep playing at a high level.

"I’m still fit, I’m still young enough and still want to play at the highest level possible.

"So I would never say never", he added.
