Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger thinks his side's late 2-1 win over Burnley at the Emirates Stadium was not decisive in the title race, but was important in the Gunners building momentum and consistency.

Wenger saw his side take the lead in the 59th minute through Shkodran Mustafi after dominating the first half with nothing to show for their efforts.

However, matters became complicated in the 65th minute mark when Arsenal lost midfielder Granit Xhaka to a red card. The Switzerland international lunged into a challenge with Burnley's Steven Defour.

It looked like Burnley had claimed a point in injury time when they were awared a penalty which Andre Gray scored, but in the 98th minute Alexis Sanchez netted to secure all three points for the hosts in thrilling fashion.

With Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur both dropping points at the weekend, the win moved Arsenal up to second and eight points off leaders Chelsea.

But Wenger insists he does not feel the result was decisive and is focused on Arsenal building consistency.

"It was an important game, but not a decisive game", he said via his club's site.

"I think at the moment what is more important is for us to build a run, to have a consistency in our results.

"That is more important than to look at the table, because I think we have built a strong run after we lost two games.

"Now we are in a position where we have to build up a run, so every game of course helps to create confidence and belief."

Arsenal will have the chance to cut Chelsea's lead when they travel to Stamford Bridge on 4th February.

However, before then the Gunners play Southampton in the FA Cup and Watford in the Premier League.
