Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson feels that spending money in this month's transfer window is not necessarily the approach manager Jurgen Klopp should take.

Klopp's side have slumped since the turn of the year, failing to win in the Premier League, with draws against Sunderland and Manchester United, and on Saturday a home defeat to struggling Swansea City.

Surprisingly amongst sides chasing the upper echelons of the Premier League, Liverpool made a profit in the summer transfer window, something which soon raised eyebrows when midfielder James Milner was played at left-back and new goalkeeper Loris Karius started struggling, meaning much criticised Simon Mignolet is back as number 1.

There have been calls for Klopp to bolster his squad this month, which are sure to intensify following the defeat to Swansea.

But Lawrenson insists Liverpool have not become a bad team overnight.

"Loads of people will say he's not spent any money, but nobody was saying that until the middle of December. They were saying what a good season we've had", he said on LFC TV.

"We don't suddenly become a worse team. We're just not playing well at the moment.

"It changes.

"You just need to get those players playing the way they were a month or so ago", Lawrenson added.

Liverpool will look to respond to their defeat against Swansea when they play host to Southampton in the second leg of their EFL Cup semi-final tie on Wednesday night; the Reds lost the first leg 1-0.
