David de Gea has asked Manchester United to allow him to join Real Madrid in the summer, according to Madrid-based sports daily Marca.

The 26-year-old goalkeeper came close to joining the European champions in 2015, but the deal fell through in the final minutes of the summer transfer window.

The Spaniard has continued to remain an important player for the club, but it seems a departure this summer could again be on the cards, even though Jose Mourinho does not want to lose the shot-stopper.

It has been claimed that Manchester United are aware that De Gea wants to return to Spain in the summer and Real Madrid are also keen to finally get the deal over the line this time around.

They have already reached an agreement over a contract with Real Madrid but the two clubs are yet to sit at the negotiating table to agree a fee for the player.

But Real Madrid are aware that they will have to pay a world record fee for a goalkeeper to sign De Gea and there are suggestions that Manchester United want around €70m to €75m to agree to sell their number one.

It has also been claimed that Manchester United’s interest in Alvaro Morata and James Rodriguez could also be key behind a deal but Real Madrid are keen to keep the negotiations separate.

Mourinho has already been identifying replacements for De Gea, with on loan Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart believed to be a target, but Manchester United are also tracking Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak and AC Milan’s prodigious talent Gianluigi Donnarumma.
