Brendan Rodgers believes it was an outstanding team performance by Celtic after his side thrashed Partick Thistle 5-0 in their penultimate league game of the season on Thursday night.

Leigh Griffiths opened the scoring from the spot in the 18th minute before Tom Rogic doubled Celtic’s lead at Firhill, with Patrick Roberts further extending the visitors’ advantage on the brink of half-time.

Roberts completed his brace and rounded off the Hoops’ scoring in the 84th minute, just two minutes after Callum McGregor found the back of the net.

Celtic have now scored 104 league goals this season and moved onto 103 points with 33 wins, equalling their own record set in the 2001/02 campaign.

And Rodgers, whose side have a game left to break the record, was thoroughly pleased with the Hoops’ display against the Jags.

“33 wins so we have one more win to beat that record for a season”, he told the club’s official site after the game.

“Everyone coming here would have expected a real severe test for us, and rightly so, as Alan [Archibald] has done fantastically with his team to get into the top-six and be really hard to beat, especially in the second half of the season.

“But you have seen the evolution of this team over the course of the season.

“We played well when we won here well 4-1 but this was a different game, and this was a team beginning to understand our game model and how we work – how the possession of the ball is key, having it for long periods and tiring out the opponents; playing high-level technical football, recovering the ball really well and then having that ruthless simplicity to score and keep that concentration going from the first minute to the last.

“It was very pleasing from a coaching aspect and it was an outstanding team performance at this stage in the season.”

Celtic will now face Hearts in their last league game of the season on Sunday before taking on Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup final on 27th May.
