Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has heaped praise on Danny Ward for the way he kept his calm during Huddersfield Town’s Championship playoff semi-final tie against Sheffield Wednesday earlier this week.

The 23-year-old goalkeeper, who has been on loan with the Terriers from Liverpool, was the hero for Huddersfield on Wednesday night when he saved two penalties in the shootout to put his team through to the playoff final.

Ward also made some important saves during the game and his Liverpool manager admits that he was cheering him and his Huddersfield team on like a normal fan.

Klopp feels the calm demeanour the young goalkeeper maintained against Wednesday was key behind him saving those two penalties and the overall performance during the crucial clash.

The Liverpool manager said in a press conference: “I loved watching the game. I was nervous like hell like a normal supporter.

“His confident manner helped him in the game and it was a wonderful performance for him and the players.

“Danny has made a big step this season.”

Ward will hope to put in another sublime performance at Wembley in the playoff final and help Huddersfield earn promotion to the Premier League.

The Welshman is set to return to Liverpool at the end of the season and it remains to be seen whether he features in Klopp’s plans for the future.
