Former Liverpool striker Neil Mellor has explained why he is confident about the Reds beating Middlesbrough on Sunday.

The Merseyside giants, who thrashed West Ham United 4-0 last weekend, need to win against Boro at Anfield on Sunday to be sure of a top four finish.

On the other hand, Middlesbrough are already relegated from the Premier League, with the Riverside Stadium outfit managing to win just one of their last 20 league outings.

And Mellor, who admitted that he was nervous before Liverpool’s clash against West Ham, stated that he was thrilled with the Reds’ performance after the break at the London Stadium.

The 34-year-old went on to add that Liverpool’s display after the break against West Ham, coupled with Middlesbrough’s poor form this season, makes him confident about Jurgen Klopp’s team coming out victorious at Anfield on Sunday.

“I was nervous before West Ham”, Mellor told LFC TV, when asked if he is nervous about Liverpool’s upcoming clash against Middlesbrough.

“Because I was just looking at West Ham and thinking – they have just beaten Tottenham, their last home game of the season, they can make it difficult and they are capable of beating the better sides.

“I was so nervous at half-time when we were 1-0 up, but second half, after that that sort of performance, I am going into Sunday against Middlesbrough confident.

“I have looked at Middlesbrough and they have been poor, really poor this season.

“Confidence is there and little bit of nerves as well because we can miss out.”

Liverpool beat Middlesbrough 3-0 in the corresponding fixture at the Riverside Stadium in December.
