Danny Mills insists that Leeds United are a bigger club than Middlesbrough, with the former Whites defender insisting that he would be surprised to see Garry Monk leave Elland Road this summer.

The Yorkshire giants, who appointed Monk as their new head coach on a one-year deal at the start of the 2016/17 campaign, narrowly missed out on a top six finish in the Championship this season.

Monk’s future at the club is uncertain as Leeds co-owner Andrea Radrizzani has yet to agree a contract extension with the head coach.

On the other hand, the 38-year-old is now the bookmakers' favourite to be the new manager at Middlesbrough.

Boro, who were relegated from the Premier League this season, are in search of a new manager; the Riverside Stadium outfit sacked Aitor Karanka in March and named Steve Agnew as their caretaker boss for the remainder of the season.

And Mills, who also played for Middlesbrough, explained that he expects Monk to stay at Leeds as the Whites are a bigger club than Boro.

“Middlesbrough have come down and they need a manager”, he was quoted as saying by the Yorkshire Evening Post.

“They’d offer a bigger budget, there’s not much doubt about that, but are they a bigger club than Leeds? No they’re not.

“Garry’s a fantastic prospect and there aren’t many more attractive jobs in the Championship.

“I’ll be very surprised if he and [Radrizzani] go their separate ways.”

Mills, who played for Leeds between 1999 and 2004, spent the 2003/04 season on loan at Middlesbrough.
