Leeds United have activated an option in head coach Garry Monk's contract to extend his stay at Elland Road for another 12 months, according to Sky Sports News HQ, amid talk Middlesbrough are keen on securing his services.

Monk has tumbled in the betting to take over at the Riverside Stadium, following Boro's relegation from the Premier League.

His deal with Leeds has been due to run out this summer and the club have been keen to talk about him signing a new contract.

But before those talks could take place, Leeds have activated an extension in Monk's deal to keep him under contract until next summer.

While there is no suggestion Monk is preparing to leave Leeds, activating the extension affords the Whites some protection if other clubs come calling for their head coach.
