Graeme Murty insists Rangers are not just handing former players jobs in the youth set-up for the sake of it.

The Gers are revamping their youth structure and have appointed ex-players Peter Lovenkrands and Andy Little to roles in the set-up, while Murty, who has been operating as head of the club's development squad, is taking on another role which will see him aim to improve the coaches at the club and also take responsibility for the development of players across the age groups.

Former Gers winger Lovenkrands was interviewed by manager Pedro Caixinha for a role on the first team coaching staff, but the Portuguese appointed Jonatan Johansson instead.

Now Lovenkrands is taking a role at the club, but Murty insists all appointments are on merit.

"I think we need to debunk a myth that it is all about giving ex-players a job – it’s not. We are trying to recruit good people, the best person for the job, and we are also trying to make sure those people encapsulate our values as a football club", Murty told Rangers TV.

"The people we have coming in are very, very strong.

"They uphold our values and are open-minded and are ready to grow, ready to change and ready to move forward because that is the kind of person we want and the kind of environment we want.

"It’s all desire to make sure our players have the best opportunity to reach their maximum level.

"Every coach should understand what it means to play for Rangers. Every coach should understand what our player characteristics look like, and every coach should know what our game model looks like", he added.

Murty had a spell in charge of the senior Rangers side earlier this season after Mark Warburton resigned from his post as manager.

He has now headed back to his job working with the club's development team.
