Jose Mourinho says he is looking forward to a break from football after guiding Manchester United to the Europa League and with it a spot in next season's Champions League.

The Red Devils faced Ajax in the final of the competition in Stockholm, taking on a vibrant, young Dutch side at the Friends Arena.

A Paul Pogba shot, which took a deflection, put Manchester United 1-0 ahead in the 18th minute. The Frenchman hit his effort from around 20 yards out, shrugging off the attentions of Ajax skipper Davy Klaassen, while his shot deflected off Davinson Sanchez and beat the goalkeeper.

The goal which killed off the visitors came in the 48th minute, a blow just as the second half was beginning, as Marouane Fellaini flicked the ball on from a corner and Henrikh Mkhitaryan made no mistake.

It finished 2-0 to the visitors on what was an emotional evening following the terrorist attack on Manchester on Monday, which left 22 people dead.

For Mourinho there was little doubt his side were deserved winners and he explained he is now ready for a good break from football.

"We always thought that we could win the Europa League and we are very happy. We played intelligently, we did it in a comfortable way. We were much stronger than them", he was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"If you are dominant in the air you go long. There are lots of poets in football but poets don't win many titles. We knew where we were better than them and we exploited their weaknesses.

"We totally deserved the win.

"I am so happy to see the boys with the crutches with the trophy and now I am on holiday. I don't want to see any international friendlies, I am selfish. I can't do it.

"For me, enough is enough. It has been a very hard last few months, we were short of numbers.

"Three trophies in one season and the Champions League. I am very happy in my most difficult season as a manager", Mourinho added.

Manchester United will now start planning to bolster their squad over the summer transfer window in anticipation of a campaign which will see Champions League football back at Old Trafford.
