Leeds United chairman Andrea Radrizzani has revealed that the Whites are keen to discuss the possibility of Garry Monk being in charge of the club for a lengthy period.

Monk, who took charge of Leeds on a one-year deal last summer, has managed to make his mark at Elland Road as he guided the club to a seventh-place finish in the Championship in the recently concluded campaign.

As a result, the Yorkshire giants are activating an option to extend Monk's contract for a further year, Radrizzani has confirmed.

However, the Italian businessman, who completed his takeover of Leeds earlier in the week, explained that the club are interested in extending Monk’s contract for more than a season.

“I hope so”, he said on BBC Radio Leeds, when asked if Monk will be Leeds’ head coach next season.

“We have the option to extend his agreement.

“I’ve found his agreement and I can decide for the club now and my decision is to take the option and extend his agreement.

“At the same time, we are also keen, myself and the management of Leeds United, to sit down with him and discuss an even longer period.”

On being asked when he will exercise the activation option on Monk’s contract for a further year, Radrizzani replied: “I will exercise the option at the end of the week.”

Monk had been linked with Norwich City, and is now the bookmakers' favourite to be the new manager at Middlesbrough, following Boro’s relegation from the Premier League.
