Garry Monk has resigned from his position as head coach at Leeds United.

The Whites indicated earlier this week that they wished to activate an option in Monk's contract to keep him at the club for a further year, while then kicking off discussions over a longer deal.

But Monk has decided that his future lies away from Elland Road.

The former Swansea City manager has put in his resignation and it has been accepted by the club's new chairman Andrea Radrizzani.

Monk's agent had requested the club not activate the year extension contained in his client's contract.

The Whites insist that Radrizzani met with Monk twice in an effort to try to keep him at the club.

Leeds said: "Mr Radrizzani has met with Garry twice since taking over at Elland Road earlier this week and during the second meeting yesterday it became clear that Garry was considering life beyond Leeds United as at no time did Garry wish to discuss terms for a longer contract.

"Following that meeting yesterday Garry’s agent requested that the option was not exercised and his resignation was received this morning.

"Whilst we are deeply saddened by Garry’s decision, there is no individual bigger than our Club and we will now begin a process to identify and appoint a new Head Coach to take the club to the next level", the Championship club added.

Leeds will now commence their search for a new head coach.

Monk meanwhile has been linked with taking over at Middlesbrough, who were recently relegated from the Premier League.
