Former Manchester United defender Gary Pallister believes Ander Herrera has all the makings of a future captain at Old Trafford.

With Wayne Rooney expected to leave Manchester United in the summer, Jose Mourinho will have the tough job of selecting the next club captain and many fans are rooting for Herrera to take over from the Englishman.

The midfielder has been one of the most important players in Mourinho’s team this season and the fans have voted him as their Player of the Year for his performances this term.

Herrera was again instrumental in Manchester United’s Europa League triumph last season and Pallister admits that the Spaniard has all the makings of a leader in the dressing room.

The former defender feels the way the midfielder has fought back after struggling to feature regularly under Louis van Gaal is commendable and he has the qualities needed to become a Manchester United captain.

When asked whether Herrera can become the next Manchester United captain, Pallister said on MUTV: “You lead by example and that is one of the reasons why Antonio [Valencia] got it [the captain’s armband in the Europa League final] and probably Ander is in the same bracket.

“His work rate is phenomenal, he has got an eye for a pass and he’s a big part of the jigsaw in there.

“You do look for leaders in a team and Ander, after a difficult season maybe last year under Van Gaal, has really come to the fore this season.

"He got the Player of the Year, so obviously the fans think highly of him and so do the players.

“He has been terrific and his performance against Chelsea was one of the performances of the season when he marked [Eden] Hazard out of the game and scored a goal.

“He’s been terrific and if you are looking for captains and then Ander certainly falls into that category.”

Herrera has often talked about the connection he feels with the club and the Manchester United fans and is keen to see out his best years at Old Trafford.
