Manchester United defender Matteo Darmian admits that only after spending some time working under Jose Mourinho can a player understand certain things about the Portuguese.

After struggling to even feature in the matchday squads earlier in the season, the Italian gradually carved out a place for himself in Mourinho’s plans and eventually became a key player.

Darmian started the Europa League final and was instrumental in blunting a good Ajax attack and received a huge hug from the Manchester United manager after they won at the Friends Arena on Wednesday night.

The full-back stressed that three trophies this season are testament to the fact that Mourinho knows how to win things and he is delighted to be part of his team.

However, the defender admits that it takes time to get used to working under the Manchester United manager and understand certain things about him.

Darmian told Italian sports daily Gazzetta dello Sport: “We had to find out some day that he is a winning manager, but you have to work with him to understand certain things.

“We won three trophies this season and the numbers speak for themselves.”

While he seemed almost certain to leave Old Trafford even a few months ago, Darmian is expected to be part of Mourinho’s plans for the new season.
