Eidur Gudjohnsen has urged Chelsea to keep their foot on the gas and not lose momentum over the summer, if they want to have a shot at retaining the Premier League title next season.

Chelsea won the title in 2015 under Jose Mourinho, but then suffered a shocking collapse in the forthcoming campaign, something which cost the Portuguese his job before Christmas and saw the Blues ultimately finish in tenth spot.

Antonio Conte led Chelsea to first place this season, but thoughts are now turning to whether the club can repeat the trick in the 2017/18 campaign.

Gudjohnsen thinks Chelsea must have a thorough pre-season and make sure they keep their foot firmly on the gas, retaining the same hunger to succeed.

The former Chelsea star, who won back to back league titles with the club in 2005 and 2006, said on Chelsea TV: "I think what mistake Chelsea do not want to make is what they did last season – take your foot off the pedal a little bit, stay a little bit longer, a shorter pre-season because it comes back to haunt you.

"That is what happened when Jose left. Chelsea had already lost the title early doors.

"Now you have to keep the momentum", Gudjohnsen added.

Chelsea will have Champions League football to cope with next season, meaning boss Antonio Conte will have to engage in more squad rotation next season.
