Legendary former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson admits that he always understood that to succeed in Scottish football a team would have to beat Celtic and Rangers.

Before joining Manchester United in 1986, the Scot became famous for breaking the Celtic-Rangers stranglehold over Scottish football with Aberdeen in the 1980s.




He won three Scottish top division titles, four Scottish Cups, the Scottish League Cup, the European Cup Winners’ Cup and the European Super Cup during his stint at Aberdeen.

Despite being a boyhood Rangers fan and a former player at Ibrox, Ferguson admits that he enjoyed beating the Gers as he insisted that too succeed in Scottish football, a team would have to beat the two giants of Glasgow football.
 


Asked if he enjoyed beating Rangers as a manager, Ferguson told Rangers TV: “I always did.

“It’s a funny thing as when I went to Aberdeen I stated that you always had to beat Rangers and Celtic.

“They were Scottish Football, and they were the history of Scottish Football.

"To win anything in Scotland, you had to beat them, although to be fair, Dundee United had a terrific side at that time under Jim McLean.”

Ferguson also had a good record against Scottish teams as a Manchester United manager and regularly beat Celtic and Rangers in European competitions.
