Manchester United have cooled their interest in Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann as their priority is signing a new number nine for the team.

The Old Trafford outfit have been heavily linked with a move for the Frenchman over the last few months and there have been suggestions that a deal could go through soon.

The Court of Arbitration for Sports upheld the transfer ban on Atletico Madrid on Thursday, but it was unlikely to have any bearing on Manchester United’s pursuit of Griezmann because of his straightforward €100m release clause.

However, it seems Manchester United’s priority lies elsewhere and according to the BBC, the club have backed down on their interest in signing the Frenchman in the summer.

It has been claimed Jose Mourinho wants to sign a new number nine because of Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s injury and signing a leader for the attacking line is their top priority.

It is unclear whether Manchester United will pursue Griezmann later in the summer after they recruit a new centre forward, but the chances of the Frenchman ending up at Old Trafford have diminished considerably.

Manchester United have been linked with making big money moves for Romelu Lukaku, Andrea Belotti and Alvaro Morata, players who all fit the number nine role.
