Bruno Alves will have no communication problems when he lines up in the team at Rangers, as his English is good, the defender's former team-mate Benni McCarthy says.

Rangers completed the signing of the 35-year-old defender earlier this week, handing him a two-year deal after he terminated his contract at Italian side Cagliari.

Alves is expected to slot straight into Pedro Caixinha's side, but with the Portuguese never having played in an English-speaking country, there had been concerns in some quarters over how quickly he would be able to effectively communicate with his team-mates.

But McCarthy, who played with Alves at FC Porto, insists communication will not be a problem as the defender's English is more than good enough.

"He'll bring something different to Rangers and beef up their defence, so he's the right defender to bring in", McCarthy explained to BBC Scotland.

"Bruno has a wealth of experience, he's played at the highest level and he's a winner.

"He'll give them a bit more stability at the back, more bite, he's a leader and he'll organise that defence.

"His communication won't be a problem because his English is very good.

"Bruno is very composed and calm on the ball so he will help the way the manager wants to play things from the back", the former Porto man continued.

"Bruno is the perfect fit for what the manager is trying to bring to Rangers right now."

Alves is one of two players snapped up by Caixinha over the last week, with the other arrival midfielder Ryan Jack, signed following his departure from fellow Scottish Premiership club Aberdeen.
