Southampton expect Virgil van Dijk to show the club loyalty and have not yet received an offer for the defender, despite links with Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City.

A scrap is threatening to break out in the transfer market for the former Celtic centre-back, with claims flying around in all quarters; Manchester City are reported to have offered £60m, Van Dijk is claimed to want to move to Liverpool, while Chelsea have been mooted as preparing a big bid.

But according to the Daily Echo, Southampton have so far received no bid for Van Dijk, would not welcome one, and also expect the Dutchman to show the club loyalty.

Van Dijk signed a five-year deal with the Saints last summer which made him the club's highest ever paid player, while they also worked hard on returning him to full fitness last season following injury issues.

Southampton feel they have little reason to sell Van Dijk, have the player under contract and do not need to sell to finance their own spending in the summer.

The south coast club believe Van Dijk would be worth as much next summer as this summer, meaning there is no pressing need to cash in on the Dutchman.

With the Saints not keen to sell, interested parties may look for Van Dijk to make clear a desire to move on to pastures new, if a move is to happen.

It is unclear though whether the defender will do so.
