Liam Kelly has insisted that Wes Foderingham deserves to be Rangers’ first choice between the sticks, with the young goalkeeper admitting that it will be hard to dislodge the former Swindon Town star from the starting eleven.

Young custodian Kelly, who spent the 2016/17 season on loan at Livingston, signed a new two-year deal with the Gers on Wednesday.

Besides Foderingham, Kelly will have to fight with Jak Alnwick and fellow academy graduate Robbie McCrorie for a place in the starting line-up.

And the 21-year-old, who explained that the trio all want to become Rangers’ first choice goalkeeper, however was quick to add that they are aware that it will be extremely difficult for any of them to take Foderingham’s place in the team.

“We support each other and push each other and that’s the key thing really”, Kelly said on Rangers TV.

“We all want that number 1 jersey.

“It’s fair to say that Wes holds that at the moment.

“But Jack, myself and even Robbie, who may be going out on loan this year, we want Wes’ jersey.

“It will be a hard, hard task with the way he’s playing.

“But we need to make him better as well.”

Foderingham was snapped up by Rangers in the summer of 2015 from Swindon Town and the goalkeeper helped the Gers back to the Scottish top flight in the 2015/16 campaign.
