Jurgen Klopp has steered Liverpool into the race for Monaco talent Kylian Mbappe, taking personal charge of the Reds' push for the Frenchman.

Mbappe is the hottest property of the summer transfer window and has a who's who of Europe's elite on his tail, though it has been widely assumed it is Real Madrid who are leading the race.

Liverpool were not known to be interested, but according to French sports daily L'Equipe, the Reds, and Klopp in particular, are keen.

Indeed, it is claimed that Klopp personally made contact with Mbappe's representatives in May, opening up a direct line and putting forward his arguments over on why the striker should continue his career at Anfield.

Klopp is pushing Liverpool's case hard, but it is unclear whether the Reds are willing to compete financially with Mbappe's other suitors, with a fee north of €100m on the agenda if the striker does leave Monaco.

Liverpool do have Champions League football in their pocket, while Klopp made a profit in last summer's transfer window, hinting he should have funds available.

In addition to another striker, Liverpool also want a left-back, a centre-back and more midfield options.
