Italian sporting chief Pietro Lo Monaco believes that Pepe Reina must understand that asking for a three-year contract at Napoli is out of line with both his performances and age.

Reina has just a year left to run on his current deal with Napoli and has been in discussions with the club over a fresh contract, while a departure is also possible amid interest from Newcastle United and Manchester City.

The 34-year-old's preference is to stay at Napoli, but his demand for a three-year contract is something the club at present are showing no sign of meeting.

For Lo Monaco, who is currently the chairman of the board at Lega Pro side Catania, Reina needs a reality check.

"Reina has to understand. He is a charismatic player in the dressing room and has his value, but if he is honest he should say that his technical performance this year was not that of a top goalkeeper", Lo Monaco said on Italian TV programme Marte Sport Live.

"There is also his age.

"To ask for three years seems a bit exaggerated.

"Napoli are right to look around [at other goalkeepers]."

Reina had a loan spell at Napoli in the 2013/14 campaign, while following a stint with Bayern Munich, he signed for the club permanently in 2015.

He has been linked with a potential reunion with former Liverpool and Napoli boss Rafael Benitez at Newcastle this summer and returning to England could become an option for Reina if his discussions with Napoli do not bear fruit.
