Liverpool are set to receive another blow in the transfer market as Lazio are close to agreeing a new contract with Dutch defender Stefan de Vrij.

After ending their interest in Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk, the Reds made a move for De Vrij but Lazio knocked back an initial offer from Liverpool for the defender.

The Dutchman has been heavily linked with a move away from Lazio over the last few months and there were suggestions that his exit from the club was more or less inevitable.

However, it seems the defender is set to continue at Lazio next season as according to Sky Italia, the player and the club are close to agreeing a new contract.

De Vrij is expected to receive a considerable hike in his wages and Lazio are expected to insert a release clause in his contract, which would see him continue with the Serie A giants.

Other than Liverpool, Italian champions Juventus were also said to be interested in the player but it seems the Dutchman is going to sign a new long-term deal with Lazio.

His current contract with the club expires at the end of next season.
