Watford were interested in signing Newcastle United target Nicolas Pepe, but it seems the Ivory Coast international was not interested in joining the Hornets.

Pepe’s future at Angers has been a subject of much speculation since the January transfer window, when Newcastle United wanted to take him to England.

The 22-year-old winger stayed put at Angers but Newcastle are back again this summer and are keen to get him on board ahead of their return to the Premier League next season.

However, Lyon are currently leading the chase for his signature and the club have been talking to his representatives to reach an agreement.

According to French outlet Foot Mercato, Watford also tried to get their hands on Pepe and showed an interest in signing him, but it seems their approach has been rebuffed by the player.

The winger has shown little inclination towards moving to Vicarage Road and it seems Watford will have to turn their attention towards other targets as they are unlikely to get Pepe.

Angers are aware Pepe is likely to leave the club during the summer transfer window and they are looking to earn over €10m from the Ivoirian’s sale.
