Tottenham Hotspur will have to pay €500,000 to Espanyol if they do not sign Pau Lopez on a permanent basis, something which looks unlikely to happen as talks between the two clubs are currently frozen.

Spurs snapped up the Spain Under-21 goalkeeper from Espanyol on a season-long loan deal last summer, paying €600,000 to take him to White Hart Lane.

A purchase option set at €7m was also included in the agreement, but Tottenham do not want to pay such a sum and their latest bid would have seen Espanyol earn around €2.3m, after bonus payments.

The offer was rejected and, according to Catalan daily Sport, discussions between the two clubs are frozen.

Talks could be opened again, but at present there is no sign of that happening and if Tottenham do not sign Lopez permanently, they will have to pay a penalty clause set at €500,000.

As such, Espanyol would have earned €1.1m from Lopez's loan move to White Hart Lane, where he did not play a single senior game.

The money will go some way towards easing Espanyol's worries over Lopez.

The shot-stopper, who is currently on international duty with Spain Under-21s, has just a year to run on his current contract and has yet to sign an extension, something the club feel may be difficult to convince him to do.
