Roma are firmly in pole position to sign Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur target Jean-Michael Seri, despite not yet having agreed a fee with Nice for the midfielder.

Seri shone brightly in a Nice side that finished a lofty third in Ligue 1 last season and as such has attracted attention heading into the summer transfer window.

Tottenham have been linked with wanting to take Seri to England, while Barcelona are also alive to his abilities.

But Roma are leading the chase and are in pole position, according to French sports daily L'Equipe.

The Italian side held talks with Seri's agent on Monday and are closing in on agreeing the terms of a contract to run for four or five years.

Seri would earn around €3m per year in the Italian capital.

However, Roma do not yet have an agreement in place with Nice, the French side having rejected the only offer made so far, of €15m.

At present, Nice are holding to the line that they will only allow Seri to leave if his €40m release clause is met.
