Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths has lambasted Rangers chairman Dave King for suggesting that the Scottish champions should have been further ahead of the Gers and the gulf between the two teams is not that big.

Rangers have made a splash in the summer transfer window and Pedro Caixinha has already brought in seven new players to his squad ahead of the start of their Europa League campaign next week.

The Glasgow giants are under pressure to do better than last season when they finished third and a whopping 39 points behind champions Celtic, who went the entire domestic campaign undefeated.

However, King stressed earlier this week that given Rangers were out of the top tier for four years, Celtic should have been further ahead in terms of development and he believes the gap between the two clubs is not as big as it could have been.

Griffiths rubbished the Rangers chairman’s claim and was quick to remind him of the points difference between the two teams and how Celtic humiliated Rangers the first time they met last season.

The Celtic striker was quoted as saying by the Press Association: "[The] gulf was 30-odd points – how big does he want it to be?

"The first game they got hammered 5-1, they got hammered 5-1 in the last game of the season.

“The gulf couldn't be any bigger."

Rangers will get their opportunity to prove their progress when they host Celtic at Ibrox in September for the first time next season.
