Alfonso Pedraza feels his loan spell at Leeds United, along with time at Lugo, played a part in convincing Villarreal to hand him a new contract.

The Spanish winger spent the first part of last term on loan at Lugo in the Spanish second tier, but he headed abroad for the second part of the campaign with a switch to English second tier side Leeds.

Leeds were obligated to pay €10m to sign Pedraza on a permanent basis if they won promotion to the Premier League, but after the Whites missed out Pedraza returned to Villarreal.

The Yorkshire giants have been linked with wanting Pedraza back, but he has just penned a new deal with Villarreal, who are considering including him in their first team squad for next term.

And Pedraza thinks his loan at Leeds helped convince Villarreal of his qualities and hand him a fresh contract.

"When the possibility of playing at Lugo was brought up, I never considered the transfer a step backwards", he was quoted as saying by El Periodico Mediterraneo.

"Quite the opposition – it was a very positive experience, both at Lugo and also the months I spent at Leeds – and that has made Villarreal trust me."

Now Pedraza wants to impress the Villarreal boss over the course of pre-season and then make an impact with the Yellow Submarine.

"I want to convince the coach I should stay.

"I want to make an impact with this team", the winger added.
