Serie A side Cagliari are set to submit an offer to Leeds United for defender Giuseppe Bellusci as they look to replace Bruno Alves.

Cagliari lost experienced centre-back Alves to Scottish giants Rangers earlier this summer and are now working hard to bring in a replacement.

Bellusci spent last term on loan in Serie A at Empoli, but was unable to help the side avoid relegation; he has a further year left on his contract at Leeds.

According to Italian outlet Tutto Mercato, Cagliari are currently in pole position to sign Bellusci and are set to send an offer to Leeds for the defender over the coming days.

Bellusci, who struggled to win over the Leeds fans, is keen to stay in Italy this summer.

However, Cagliari do have competition for Bellusci as another Italian side in the shape of Benevento are keen on the centre-back.

Benevento won promotion to Serie A last season and are looking to make sure they have a squad good enough to survive Italian top flight football.

The Stregoni appear to have much to do to move ahead of Cagliari in the race for Bellusci's signature though.
